Incubus

An incubus is, in mythology and folklore, a male demon who lies upon sleeping people, especially women, in order to engage in sexual relations, appearing as an attractive man. It has a female counterpart known as a succubus. In modern interpretations, the sensation of an oppressive presence during sleep is often linked to sleep paralysis.

Although, like angels, demons are traditionally said to lack gender, when they lie with humans they abandon their demonic form and take on the appearance of an attractive human being, whether male or female. From this perspective, incubus and succubus can be understood as essentially the same entity, as they physically transform into whatever form is most appealing to their victim. A gay man, for instance, would not find pleasure in lying with a woman, just as a lesbian woman would not be attracted to a man.

The purpose of the incubus or succubus is believed to be the absorption of the victim’s vital energy and, in some accounts, the impregnation of human women or the demon itself becoming pregnant in order to give birth to more incubi and succubi.

Un íncubo es, en la mitología y el folclore, un demonio masculino que se posa sobre personas dormidas, especialmente mujeres, para mantener relaciones sexuales, apareciendo como un hombre atractivo. Tiene una contraparte femenina llamada súcubo. En la actualidad, la experiencia de una presencia opresiva durante el sueño suele relacionarse con la parálisis del sueño.

Aunque, al igual que los ángeles, los demonios supuestamente carecen de género, cuando yacen con humanos cambian su forma demoníaca por la de un ser humano atractivo, ya sea con apariencia masculina o femenina. De este modo, se puede concluir que íncubos y súcubos serían, en esencia, la misma criatura, ya que mutan físicamente en función de aquello que resulta atractivo para su víctima. Un hombre gay, por ejemplo, no disfrutaría yaciendo con una mujer, y lo mismo ocurriría con una mujer lesbiana.

El objetivo del íncubo o súcubo sería absorber la energía vital de la víctima y, en algunos casos, embarazar a mujeres humanas o quedar embarazados ellos mismos para engendrar más íncubos y súcubos.
